Affordable housing affects everyone

Lack of affordable housing is one of the main issues that contributes to homelessness and housing insecurity. When communities address affordable housing, it is good for everyone. That’s why we’re excited about the work of the Eden Prairie Housing Alliance. We invited Alliance member Jan Eian to share more in this guest blog post.

The importance of affordable housing

Affordable housing isn’t just a buzz word in Eden Prairie. It’s a key element in shaping the city’s future. It’s highlighted in the city’s 2024 plan, and it was a major focus of a 2020 task force dedicated to tackling housing challenges.

The definition of affordable housing

Affordable housing is defined as housing that costs no more than 30 percent of a household’s income, leaving 70 percent for necessities such as food, transportation, and health care.

The cost of housing in Eden Prairie makes it hard for families to find affordable homes. In addition to affecting who can live here, it influences economic development, traffic congestion, commute times, and air quality.

The Eden Prairie Housing Alliance

The Eden Prairie Housing Alliance tackles important housing topics and contributes to addressing mixed-income housing issues in Eden Prairie.

We are a dynamic, collaborative team made up of residents, business and civic leaders and housing experts as well as representatives from the Eden Prairie Community Foundation and the City.

With a blend of passion, expertise, and community activism, we are dedicated to educating and informing residents about affordable housing, ensuring a shared understanding of its importance.

By fostering this common understanding, we hope to build broad-based support for affordable housing solutions.
